[Satellite TODAY 09-09-11] Gilat Satellite Networks has signed an agreement to deliver its SkyEdge 2 platform-based SkyAbis cellular backhaul solution to an unnamed South East Asian mobile network operator, Gilat announced Sept. 8.
The project will see Gilat supply and install two SkyEdge 2 hubs, 160 SkyEdge I2 Pro VSATs, A-bis optimization solutions and other related services. Gilat said that some of the sites would be new deployments, while others will replace older SCPC modems that are currently in use. Gilat’s SkyAbis cellular backhaul solution aims to enable the company’s network operator customer to allocate satellite capacity to a specific site when required. The solution was also designed to enable the operator to expand the network to additional sites.
“As mobile networks expand to provide better coverage in remote locations, the importance of satellite backhaul in the market is growing. Gilat’s SkyAbis solution provides significant savings for these remote sites, making the business proposition for the mobile network operator more attractive," Gilat Vice President of System Integration and Information Technologies Yossi Gal said in a statement.
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
