[Satellite TODAY 08-02-11] Gilat Satellite Networks has signed an agreement to deliver network equipment and Ka-band end-user terminals for SES’ satellite-based Internet service Astra2Connect, Gilat announced Aug. 1.

Gilat will provide gateway equipment and related services to SES, as well as customer premises equipment to Astra2Connect ISP reseller nominees. The project, including deals with SES and nominees, has a potential value of $70 million in the next five years.
SES’ end-user terminals will support download speeds of up to 20 MB/s. Gilat said its Ka-band platform would allow SES to deliver faster Internet and VoIP services to private households and small businesses across Europe as SES begins augmenting the service in the fourth quarter of 2012 by using additional multiple spot beam Ka-band capacity onboard its Astra 2F, 2E and 2G spacecraft.
Those satellites are scheduled for launch between 2012 and 2014 for placement at the 28.2 degrees East orbital slot.
“This is an important milestone for Gilat and a strong acknowledgement of our Ka-band technology. The use of Ka-band technology represents a significant shift in the satellite market. This agreement represents an important opportunity for Gilat to be at the forefront of next-generation satellite services, while providing consumers and businesses across Europe with valuable improvements in their day to day broadband services,” Gilat CEO Amiram Levinberg said in a statement.
