[Satellite TODAY 08-01-11] Canadian satellite company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) grew its 2011 second quarter operating earnings to $29 million from $23 million in the same period last year, which drove increased revenues of $195 million, the company announced in its latest financial results issued July 30.
MDA’s management said the company continued to deliver solid net earnings per share for continuing operations at $0.77 — more than doubling its $0.36 per-share mark in the second quarter of 2010. As of June 30, MDA’s backlog was $833 million, compared with $877 million at the end of its previous quarter in March.
MDA also announced that the company intends to make a substantial issuer bid to purchase and cancel up to $500 million in outstanding common shares from shareholders. The company’s Board of Directors said it determined that the offer is in the best interest of its shareholders following the sale of MDA’s Property Information business in January.
“The range of offer prices under the auction will be $53 to $60 per share, with increments of $0.50 within that range… The offer is not expected to preclude MDA from pursuing strategic acquisitions, its foreseeable business opportunities or the future growth of the company’s business,” MDA said in a company statement.
