[Satellite TODAY Insider 07-12-11] The number of pay-TV DTH homes will increase from 139 million at the end of 2010 to approximately 195 million across 73 countries by the end of 2016, according to a Digital TV Research report issued July 11.
The report’s satellite TV forecasts showed promising potential for operators, estimating that penetration would grow from 10.3 percent of TV households in 2010 to 13.1 percent by 2016, led by India’s contribution of 45 million pay DTH homes followed by the United States with 36 million.
Digital TV Research Analyst and Report Author Simon Murray said satellite penetration would be highest in South Africa and Ireland, with 47 percent and 41 percent, respectively.
“Satellite TV revenues will overtake cable TV revenues in 2011,” Murray said in the report. “DTH revenues will reach $86 billion in 2016, up from $71 billion in 2010. DTH will command nearly half the total revenues by 2016, up from only 43 percent in 2006. The United States will remain DTH market leader, though its share of the total will fall from 54 percent in 2006 to 41 percent in 2016. Brazil will add the most DTH revenues ($3.1 billion) between 2010 and 2016 — more than doubling its total in the process.”
In its previous report issued in June, Digital TV Research pointed out that total pay TV revenues were only up $18 billion last year. The United Stated is projected to remain the DTH market leader in 2016, even though its share of the total market will fall from 54 percent in 2006 to 41 percent in 2016.
Digital TV Research said it believes that in round subscription revenues will dip as more homes convert to low-cost programming packages. “Outside of the key pay-TV sub-sectors, video on-demand revenues are set to increase much faster than subscription revenues, however, these revenues will amount to only $5.7 billion — or 3.3 percent — of the total by 2016,” the report said.
According to Murray, the number of FTA digital DTH homes in 2010 was 97 million, with another 22 million to be added by the end of 2016.
