[Satellite TODAY 06-22-11] Satellite operator SES has chosen Arianespace to launch its Astra 5B satellite in the middle of 2013, the launch company announced June 21.
Astra 5B will be launched into geostationary transfer orbit by an Ariane 5 rocket operating from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana. SES selected Arianespace under the scope of the existing multi-launch agreement between the two companies.
Astra 5B, currently under construction by Astrium, will be fitted with Ku- and Ka-band transponders to provide broadcasting, VSAT network data transmission and other broadband services over Europe from the 31.5 degrees East orbital slot.
Arianespace is scheduled to launch SES’ Astra 1N and SES 2 satellites by the end of 2011.
