[Satellite TODAY 03-03-11] SES Astra has launched an Astra2Connect-powered broadband sub-distribution service based in Germany to provide connectivity to European customers in areas without terrestrial broadband, the operator announced March 2.
The service aims to allow telecommunication operators and Internet service providers the ability to offer satellite-based broadband connections at speeds of up to 6 megabits per second without requiring customers to install a satellite antenna. Instead, the satellite broadband connection will be installed at street cabinets located in these communities, allowing users to access broadband Internet with a standard DSL modem.
“Our sub-distribution solution bears an enormous potential to close the white spots in Germany while promoting cooperation between infrastructure providers and telco operators at the same time. We are convinced that we are offering an attractive service for communities, Internet service providers and end customers alike,” SES Astra CCO Norbert Holzle said in a statement.
