[Satellite TODAY 03-02-11] MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) reported a 2010 fourth-quarter loss of $55.6 million, compared with income of $31.2 million in the same period a year ago, due to a one-time charge related to the sale of its property information business, the company announced March 1.
MDA’s property information business, which provided satellite data to government, commercial and enterprise markets, was sold to U.S. private equity firm TPG Capital in November for $850 million.
In a statement, MDA CEO Dan Friedmann said the sale was part of his decision to realign MDA’s business into a smaller unit, diverting the proceeds of the sale to support its businesses in aerospace information systems, surveillance, satellite information distribution and robotics. "MDA will stay on the hunt for acquisitions that will build on its existing talents and help it break into new markets."
