[Satellite TODAY 02-28-11] Liberty Global’s 2010 fourth-quarter profits fell 43 percent to $57.5 million from $100 million in the same period last year due to weaker tax benefits and losses on derivatives, the company announced in its latest financial results, issued Feb. 35.
Liberty, which owns stakes in DirecTV, O3b and a variety cable and broadband operations throughout the world, saw its fourth quarter revenues grow 18 percent to $2.43 billion as more of its customers switched to digital services and triple-play packages. Favorable currency exchange rates, better margins and profits from discontinued operations also helped Liberty offset some of its losses.
Liberty ends 2010 with about 17.6 million customers. The company said it making efforts to ensure more consistent profitability by adding 319,000 revenue-generating units during the quarter — a 34 percent increase from the same period last year.
