[Satellite TODAY 02-23-11] Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) has approved a 3-D TV delivery system specification for frame compatible plano-stereoscopic 3-D services, the broadcasting consortium announced Feb. 22.
The system aims to enable service providers to use their existing HDTV infrastructures to deliver 3-D TV services compatible with 3-D TV capable displays already in the market. The specification covers both use cases of a set-top box delivering services to a 3-D TV-capable display device via an HDMI connection and via a display device receiving 3-D TV services directly via a built-in tuner and decoder.
The DVB said will submit the specification to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute for formal standardization. DVB’s BlueBook A154 "Frame Compatible Plano-Stereoscopic 3-DTV" (DVB-3-D TV) has been published and is available for downloading from the DVB website.
