[Satellite TODAY Insider 01-19-11] Hughes Network Systems broke its own broadband satellite terminal shipment record last year, reporting 327,000 units delivered and bringing its cumulative number shipped worldwide to more than 2.5 million, CEO Pradman Kaul said.
Exceeding optimistic analyst projections on the broadband terminal market, Kaul said his company’s performance has brought in more than 500,000 HughesNet consumer service subscribers and is growing at accelerated rates.
“Qualified customers have taken advantage of the $58.7 million subsidy awarded to Hughes under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Broadband Stimulus program. Every one of those 2.5 million terminals is a testament to the trust placed in Hughes by our customers for their communications solutions,” Kaul said.
Hughes’ announcement comes less than a week after the worldwide Broadband Forum’s Point Topic report showed global broadband subscriptions now exceeding 500 million. The report said while China and the United States will continue to add more lines than any other single market, Russia and Brazil are the most rapidly growing, increasing subscribers at 22 percent and 14 percent, respectively.
Hughes recently signed enterprise HX router deals in Russia and has unveiled a slew of enterprise and government service offerings, including technology service to the U.S. government through its U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) schedule contract vehicle over the past two months.
Hughes and ViaSat’s WildBlue subsidiary have about 1 million broadband connections between them in the United States, and both operators have seen solid growth in recent years, the report said.
