[Satellite TODAY 07-07-10] Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) has been awarded a contract from broadcaster Hispasat Group to build the Amazonas 3 spacecraft, SS/L announced July 6.
Amazonas 3 will be designed to replace and expand coverage provided by Hispasat’s Amazonas 1 satellite at 61 degrees West. The satellite, based on SS/L’s 1300 satellite bus, will be capable of operating up to 33 Ku-band and 19 C-band transponders over Europe and North and South America.
Hispasat will use Amazonas 3 to broadcast and distribute TV and radio programming in the Americas and Europe as well as for deploying universal social services and corporate fixed and mobile telephone networks in the regions. The satellite is scheduled to launch in 2012.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
