[Satellite TODAY 10-30-09] Hughes Network Systems sold 10 gigabits (Gbps) per second of capacity on its Jupiter satellite to Canadian broadband provider Barrett Xplore in a deal valued at $100 million, Hughes announced Oct. 29.
    The capacity represents 10 percent of Hughes’ total available capacity on the 100 Gbps satellite and puts a $1 billion value on Jupiter’s total capacity. The deal with Barrett Xplore also leaves the possibility of consumer premise equipment, which could increase the contract amount.
    Jupiter, scheduled to launch in 2012, will use multi-spot beam Ka-band to provide Barrett Xplore with additional capacity in order to serve rural and unserved Canadian households with a broadband service offering a range of packages of up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) for residential service and up to 25 Mbps for business.
    Barrett Xplore uses Hughes Spaceway 3 to serve its customers in the market.
