[Satellite TODAY 10-05-09] Arianespace successfully launched the Amazonas-2 and ComSatBw-1 satellites on Oct. 1 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket, the launch company announced.
    Amazonas-2, a civilian relay platform owned by Hispasat, aims to expand the company’s operations in Latin America by providing communications services and DTH through 54 Ku-band and 10 C-band transponders.
    ComsatBw-1 is a German military satellite that aims to develop the German Bundeswehr‘s (German Armed Forces) concept for network-centric operations.
    The flight orbited a combined payload mass of more than 7,900 kg, bringing Ariane 5’s total lift performance in 2009 to approximately 34,000 kg.
