[Satellite Today 01-09-09] Orbcomm signed a global automatic identification system (AIS) distribution agreement for commercial purposes with Lloyd’s Register – Fairplay, a provider of insight and information in the commercial shipping sector, Orbcomm announced Jan. 8.
     Lloyd’s Registser operates a global network of terrestrial-based AIS receivers, which is used to validate the position of the world’s merchant fleet. The company will add Orbcomm’s satellite-sourced information to its communication arsenal.
    The agreement includes a minimum annual license fee to Orbcomm that begins in January. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
