[Satellite Today 10-20-08] Lao Telecom, a joint venture between the government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Thaicom, has launched the first 3G service in Laos, Lao Telecom announced Oct. 20..
Lao Telecom provides EDGE and GPRS services throughout Laso and will rollout 3G mobile services in stages. The company hopes to reach 30,000 3G subscribers by the end of 2008 and expects to reach 100,000 subscribers in 2009.
The government of Laos holds 51 percent of Lao Telecommunications, while Shenington Investments, in which Thaicom is a major shareholder, holds a 49 percent stake.
