[Satellite Today 09-09-08] Arqiva Ltd. signed a multi-year contract for Intelsat capacity at 1 degree West, Intelsat announced Sept. 9. Arqiva will use the capacity to distribute DTH and cable programming throughout Europe as well as support new MPEG-4 high-definition (HD) channel distribution.
Intelsat’s neighborhood at 1 degree West, which includes Intelsat’s IS-10-02 satellite and Telenor Satellite Broadcasting’s Thor satellites, serves nearly 5 million DTH households and more than 10 million cable homes throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the Nordic region. Intelsat expects to expand its capacity serving the region through ownership of 10 transponders on Thor 6, which is scheduled for launch in 2009.
Separately, Intelsat signed a multi-year contract extension with International Network Distribution (IND), a global distributor of ethnic channels, for capacity on Intelsat’s IS-8 satellite at 166 degrees East.
The capacity will increase service delivery to meet the growing demands of Australian consumers while providing IND the ability to increase its services by launching new channel offerings through a multiplexer that will be managed by Intelsat at its teleport in Napa, Calif.
