Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) performed a 5-second test firing of its main engine May 28, SpaceX announced. The wet dress rehearsal took place at the company’s Space Launch Complex-3 West pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

“A significant amount of our objectives are centered around learning how to operate on a range, specifically Vandenberg Air Force Base,” Tom Buzza, launch director for SpaceX, said in a statement. “We have fired the engine many, many times at our propulsion test facility in Texas. So just firing the engine is not essentially a primary objective. However, firing that engine at Vandenberg with a brand new system is really important.”

SpaceX hopes to perform its first mission, carrying the Tacsat-1 satellite for the U.S. Department of Defense, later this summer.
