By Telesat | February 11, 2014

Telesat, Canada’s premier satellite operator, strongly supports the Government of Canada’s announcement of $305 million in new funding to extend and enhance broadband access for Canadians living in rural and remote communities, including in the North. The Government’s action will create economic opportunities for rural and Northern Canadians by stimulating innovation, improving productivity and enhancing access to information and markets.

“Telesat applauds the Government of Canada’s decisive action today to achieve near universal access to high-speed broadband networks,” said Dan Goldberg, Telesat’s President and CEO. “Telesat has state-of-the-art satellite infrastructure that is available today to help the Government quickly reach its objective of providing an additional 280,000 Canadian households with at least 5 megabits per second of broadband connectivity to the internet. We look forward to working with the Government and other key stakeholders to put this advanced satellite infrastructure immediately to work so that Canadians living in rural and Northern communities can be active participants in the digital economy and expand their access to markets at home and abroad.”
