Telenor Satellite Broadcasting confirmed its Thor II satellite has been successfully deorbited. The six-day deorbiting operation was completed on Jan. 10.
Thor II was Telenor’s first communications satellite, launched in 1997 by a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral. During the beginning of its mission it operated together with Thor I, which was purchased as Marcopolo 2 after the collapse of British Satellite Broadcasting. Later in its mission, Thor II was leased to SES for use at 5 degrees East.
After 15 years or operational life, Thor II was placed on a “graveyard slot” in an orbit more than 350 km above GEO.
