Encompass Makes Key Move in Latin America
[Satellite TODAY Insider 11-29-12] Encompass Digital Media has made a key move in the Latin America broadcast market by acquiring TIBA Satellite Services, which is based out of Buenos Aires. TIBA is a provider of outsourced channel origination and transmission services in Latin America, one of the most vibrant television markets globally right now.
TIBA counts blue chip broadcast brands FOX, Disney, ESPN, DirecTV and Turner amongst its customer base. It has also been a key customer of SES in recent times, signing a new capacity deal with them last year. It agreed to extend its use of more than five transponders on the SES-6 satellite for the entire life of the spacecraft. SES-6 is scheduled for launch early next year and will be located at the 319.5 degrees East orbital slot.
For Encompass, the deal is further evidence of a strategy targeting high growth developing regions such as Latin America and Asia. The company is a growing presence in the global teleport market, and in particular is targeting emerging regions such as Latin America and Asia. Recently, the company announced that it had a reached a major broadcast milestone in Asia with the origination and transmission of 100 channels from its Singapore facility.
Now, the company will look to target the lucrative Latin America market which is seeing strong growth in its key broadcast markets. The market is a vibrant one for broadcast with many new DTH operations starting up in Brazil and other key territories. With economies performing strongly, the demand for digital TV is on the increase.
For TIBA, the company hopes to benefit from becoming part of Encompass. “We have been looking for a partner that would augment TIBA’s position from a business perspective and one that would provide a strong cultural fit. Encompass was the perfect match; a dynamic partner with global reach that will lead the combined company into a new and successful path of growth,” Norberto Alvarez Vitale, TIBA CEO said in a statement.
