DirecTV compromised to distribute ViaSat’s Exede high-speed Internet service, which would compete with HughesNet similar service that launched last month. It is expected that DirecTV will offer television and Internet bundles.
ViaSat has claimed that Exede will rival cable Internet and outperform telephone DSL with 12 megabits per second speed. To power the service, the company launched ViaSat 1, a high-capacity satellite, last year and started offering Exede services in March 2012. By the end of September, there were approximately 429,000 subscribers to the service.
ViaSat also has deals with Dish Networks but now that HughesNet released its own high-speed Internet service, it is unclear if Dish will diminish Exede’s importance.
