Lufthansa Set to Launch In-Flight Broadband
[Satellite Today 10-13-09] Germany’s Lufthansa will launch in-flight broadband services in mid-2010, the airline confirmed Oct. 12.
Lufthansa will use Panasonic’s multi-megabyte Ku-band solution, eXConnect, for the FlyNet service, which will will provide Internet access as well as send SMS messages by mobile phone and transfer data via smart phones.
The eXPhone system and service are provided in conjunction with AeroMobile, a provider of in-flight mobile communication services and technology. MTN Satellite Communications will provide the Ku-band satellite network services for Panasonic’s Global Communications Service business. Panasonic has contracted with EMS Technologies‘ Defence & Space Division to provide the advanced dual-panel, satellite-tracking antenna, developed collaboratively by Panasonic and EMS. Panasonic licenses iDirect‘s satellite IP router technology as a core component of the Panasonic eXConnect in-flight satellite transmission platform.
Lufthansa and Panasonic will equip a major part of Lufthansa’s long-range fleet with the FlyNet service within the first year of operation, Lufthansa said.
