Media Analysts: Pay-TV Revenues May Fall Despite Predicted Subscriber Growth
[Satellite Today 05-11-09] Analysis firm Pyramid Research predicts that the number of pay-TV subscribers will grow 8 percent in 2009, but revenues could fall, the company announced May 6. According to the report, there will likely be about 733 million pay-TV subscribers globally by the end of 2009.
Pyramid Research estimates that average expenditure per pay-TV household will decrease by 6 percent around the globe, with spending in some emerging markets declining by as much as 20 percent.
“The prospects for IPTV platforms appear to be most promising across the Western European markets, where IPTV subscribers are projected to account for 15 percent of total pay-TV base by year-end. Elsewhere, IPTV’s share of subscribers will remain less than 5 percent of the total market,” said Ozgur Aytar, research manager at Pyramid Research, in a statement.
