More Content, More Platforms

The Satellite Group has written numerous articles about the changes taking place in the broadcasting industry, many of them from the angle that changes are being driven by the evolving nature of the consumer and the demand for access to content anytime, anywhere on the platform of the consumer’s choice.
We are seeing the same impact in our line of work as well, as hardcopy magazines are having to share bandwidth with the Internet, mobile platforms and other means of accessing content. Via Satellite readers will continue to receive the magazine each month as well as the Satellite Today Daily News Feed, but these new platforms have been developed to provide readers with new content as well as new ways to access the content in the most convenient forms.
One of the newly added features are monthly webinars that are moderated by our Satellite Group editors. The webinars supplement an article found in the most recent issue of Via Satellite and provide readers with a chance to learn more about the topic from industry experts as well as ask follow-up questions that were not answered within the article. Already, webinars have taken a technical look at topics such as satellite newsgathering, video and data compression, and the upcoming switch from analog to digital broadcasting. This month’s webinar, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. EST, will take a deeper look into the impact that IP technology is having on broadcasting and communications networks, and February’s webinar will delve more into the digital signage market.
Another feature that began in late 2008 is a monthly e-newsletter focusing on a hot topic within the satellite landscape. The rotating lineup will have newsletters covering broadband, IP, military and mobile issues and their impact or role on the satellite communications business. Each newsletter will have:  stories focusing on a particular aspect of the market, new technology or new business model, an interview with an executive or customer and the latest industry briefs. Each of these newsletters can be delivered to your e-mail address on an opt-in basis at the SatelliteToday.com Web site, so readers can pick and choose which topics they would like to see more on.
The e-newsletter format will also be taken on the road in 2009, as Via Satellite editors will provide expanded coverage of major industry shows. Starting with Cabsat 2009 in March in Dubai, readers will have the option of receiving a daily e-mail that is a condensed version of the e-newsletter. This e-daily will provide stories from the show floor, interviews with executives at the show, briefs and insight from editors. The first issue will look at the expectations for the show, and then issues will be delivered each day of the event and conclude with a wrap-up edition. Visit SatelliteToday.com to view our e-daily from IBC 20008.
The e-daily also will be produced during NAB in April, CommunicAsia in June and IBC in September and is perfect not only for people that cannot attend the show but wish to keep up with developments but also for attendees that cannot possibly keep up with everything happening at these events.
The Via Satellite editorial team looks forward to 2009 and hopes that these new efforts will continue to provide our readers with the quantity and quality of industry coverage you have come to expect.
