By Staff Writer | February 26, 2007

NASA gave Hamilton Sundstrand, a unit of United Technologies Corp. [UTC], a maximum $5 million contract for work on the Ares I crew expeditionary vehicle that will replace the space shuttle fleet.

Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International Inc. of Rockford, Ill., will design, develop, fabricate, test and deliver engineering models of a turbine pump assembly for the Ares I upper stage thrust vector control subsystem.

The cost-plus-fixed-fee contract — a competitive award — has a two-year period of performance with a maximum value of $5 million.

The NASA Glenn Research Center is the lead for the Ares I upper stage thrust vector control subsystem. This is part of the Constellation Program that will produce a new generation of space hardware to take mankind on explorations of the solar system.
