All Road Communications, a San Diego-based satellite phone and services provider, expects motor races to drive demand for business this week, with the Baja 1000, Baja Haha and Dakar events in the offing.

“The Baja 1000 off-road race is especially big for us this year due to the fact that the race is 1,050 miles in a straight line, meaning that the racers will be out of cell- phone coverage for most of the route,” Chris Hoar, president of All Road, said in a statement. New to this year’s race is Inmarsat’s BGAN Internet service, he said, reporting that rentals of Nera Worldpro 1000 units and sales of Thrane & Thrane Explorer 500 units are both up due to racers and support crews seeking high-speed Internet access.

All Road offers Iridium and Globalstar satellite phones for weekly rental from $29.99, Inmarsat BGAN-compatible units for $119 per week.
