Satellite telecom operator Globalstar announced it signed a preliminary 7.7 million euro ($9.66 million) agreement with Alcatel Alenia Space to study construction of a new network of 48 satellites.

A definitive order is expected no later than Nov. 15, Globalstar said.

Alcatel Alenia Space, a joint venture of Alcatel and Finmeccanica Spa, built Globalstar’s first satellite network.
