Indian Space Research Organisation‘s satellite-based search and rescue network was used to help save 30 crewmembers from a ship in distress in Sri Lankan water.

The agency’s geostationary communication satellite, Insat-3A, relayed distress signals transmitted by the distress beacon of the ship Glory Moon, which is registered in Panama. The ship was drifting after its communications and navigation systems were destroyed in a July 11 fire. The signals were detected by ISRO’s Indian Mission Control Centre in Bangalore, which alerted the Indian Coast Guard.
