Eumetsat, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, completed commissioning of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG-2) satellite, Eumetsat announced. The spacecraft is being prepared for relocation to 0° longitude, where it will replace Meteosat-7, which is being repositioned to continue Eumetsat’s Indian Ocean Data Coverage service.
On becoming operational, MSG-2 will be renamed Meteosat-9 and provide back-up for Meteosat-8, located at 3.4° West. This will complete the transition from the first to the second generation of Eumetsat’s geostationary satellite systems and ensure a continuous and uninterrupted supply of data and meteorological products.
