Boeing To Define Next-Generation Polar Satellite Payload

Boeing received a study contract from the U.S. Air Force to define the next-generation communications payload for a polar-orbiting satellite, the company announced July 6.

Under the six-month, $1.5 million contract, Boeing will look at options for producing and delivering a pair of secure, extremely high frequency communications payloads that would be integrated into separate spacecraft for the proposed Enhanced Polar System. The program would provide secure communications for warfighters operating in northern polar regions.

The contract includes a 14-month, $8 million option that would include delivery of a completed system architecture, a system engineering master plan and a final risk management plan.
