Report: Arabsat 4A Can Be Salvaged
Arabsat 4A, left in a wrong orbit during a Feb. 28 launch anomaly, can still be delivered into a usable orbit, Anatoly Perminov, head of Russia’s Federal Space Agency, said.
“Our experts think it is possible to bring the Arab satellite to an operational orbit, where it can function for up to two years,” Perminov said during a press conference, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
A Proton launch provided by International Launch Services left the communications satellite short of its intended orbit when the Breeze M upper stage shut down early during its planned burn sequence.
Arabsat 4A, manufactured for Arabsat by EADS Astrium, was designed to provide communications services to Arab countries and neighboring regions.
