Sea Launch, SpaceX Delay Missions
Sea Launch delayed the Feb. 12 launch of a direct broadcast satellite for Echostar Communications Corp. for undisclosed reasons. This was the second launch delay for Echostar 10, which originally was slated to be launched Feb. 8.
Echostar 10, built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, is a new-generation satellite that will enable Echostar’s Dish Network to deliver expanded services and channel offerings to customers throughout the United States from an orbital slot at 110 degrees West.
Sea Launch has not set a new launch date.
Separately, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) performed a test firing of its Falcon 1 rocket after it scrubbed the inaugural launch of the vehicle, which had been scheduled to take place Feb. 10. Previous launch attempts in November and December also were scrubbed.
The mission, which will take place from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, will carry Falconsat-2 into orbit. The spacecraft, part of the U.S. Air Force Academy’s satellite program, will measure space plasma phenomena, which can adversely affect space-based communications, including GPS and other civil and military communications.
