Xtar LLC received a five-year contract from Hisdesat Servicios Estratégicos S.A. to provide the Royal Danish Navy (RDN) with X-band communications services via the Xtar-Eur satellite, Xtar announced Jan. 17. The satellite will provide service throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Xtar, a joint venture between Loral Space & Communications and Spain’s Hisdesat, launched the Xtar-Eur spacecraft in February. The satellite, the first one developed to provide commercial X-band service, entered service in April with the Spanish Defense Ministry as the first customer.

“The agreement with the RDN is a direct result of the unique industry and government partnership that Xtar and Hisdesat have achieved with its joint venture,” Denis Curtin, Xtar’s COO, said in a statement.

In May, Xtar received a contract from the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Telecommunications Service Program Office to provide X-band communications services to embassies and consulates in Africa and Asia.
