NTL Ups Triple Play Ante Against BSkyB
U.K. cable operator NTL confirmed that it has made an approach for wireless operator Virgin Mobile. If the deal, which would be in the $1.5 billion range, were to go ahead, NTL would be in a position to offer a variety of communication services ranging from broadband, telephony, digital television and possibly mobile.
The move shows that the cable operator is ready to become aggressive in its battle with BT and BSkyB. BSkyB announced in October its intentions to acquire Easynet to launch triple-play services. If the Virgin Mobile deal were to go ahead NTL “intends to use the Virgin brand to offer a quadruple play of Internet, television and fixed line and mobile telephony,” NTL said.
