Arianespace Delays Mission
Arianespace announced this weekend that it has postponed the launch of the Ariane 5 ECA carrying the Spaceway 2 and Telkom 2 satellites. The dual-satellite Ariane 5 ECA mission, which had been scheduled for Nov. 12, will be rescheduled in the coming days, the company said..
In a statement, Arianespace said “a problem had been encountered during the final preparations for the launcher.” This was the second delay for the mission. Arianespace announced Nov. 9 that it had delayed the launch for 48 hours to carry out “additional verifications.”
The Boeing-built Spaceway 2 will enable U.S. operator DirecTV to bring local high-definition programming to most of the U.S. population, as well as expand its standard definition local offerings. Telkom 2 is an Orbital Sciences Corp.-build spacecraft and will be used by Indonesia’s PT Telkom to expand its satellite communications coverage area in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
Arianespace has seen a number of delays to missions this year. In September, the launch of Syracuse 3A and Galaxy 15 was delayed after an anomaly was found on an element of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. The launch eventually took place in October. In July, Arianespace also announced a delay in the launch of Thaicom 4 (IPStar) on the Ariane 5. The satellite was eventually launched Aug 11.
