Globalstar announced Nov. 1 it would offer simplex, or one-way, data services to customers throughout parts of the Caribbean, Central America and the northern part of South America via its Venezuelan gateway. The data service allows Globalstar to offer mobile asset tracking services in these regions. It can also be used to monitor and send information from a wide array of industrial and security applications for fixed assets, such as environmental measurements, utility meter readings or the status of various devices or instruments.

The data service can be made available due to a hardware upgrade in the gateway. Globalstar said it would begin extensive field trials of its offering later this month.
