Northrop Grumman Corp. and Raytheon Co. won a program definition and risk reduction contract for the next-generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) system — GOES-R, the companies announced Oct. 28.

Under the contract from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the team will compare the performance and cost of alternative system architectures, do system definition and initiate system and segment designs for products.

The six-month contract is valued at $10 million and includes a 16-month extension worth $20 million.
