New Path 1 Technology Could Replace Satellite-Based Contribution
Path 1 Network Technologies Inc. will launch a pair of new products to support its strategy for using the public Internet infrastructure for broadcast video contribution.
The Vx8000 2.0, a multi-port, bidirectional Internet protocol (IP) video gateway combines standard and proprietary-based forward error correction technologies for live broadcast-applications. NET, a network evaluation tool, analyzes the condition of IP networks and their ability to transport broadcast-quality video.
Path 1 hopes its new technology will help replace satellite-based contribution feeds, McCrary said. Path 1 is targeting niche programmers, broadcasters, and teleport operators who cannot afford the expense of satellite links or expensive, dedicated terrestrial networks, but who want to deliver high-quality broadcast signals over less expensive private networks, including the public Internet.
“There’s no question that satellite is very well equipped to distribute content to thousands or even millions of people,” he comments. “We’re not talking about replacing that with terrestrial delivery. We’re looking at customers who need to separate the contribution side from the distribution side.”
