Final Titan 4 Carries NRO Payload Into Orbit
Lockheed Martin performed the final launch of a Titan 4 rocket for the U.S. government, the company announced Oct. 19. The launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., carried a national security payload for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. built the first and second stages and provides overall program management and launch services for the Titan 4 program. In total, 39 Titan 4 missions were performed — 12 from Vandenberg and 27 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The vehicle is being replaced in the U.S. government stable by Lockheed Martin’s Atlas 5 and Boeing Co.‘s Delta 4 rockets.
