NASA Targets November Date For Calipso, Cloudsat Mission
NASA has not yet determined a date for the launch of the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (Calipso) and Cloudsat satellites, the agency said. NASA is targeting a November launch, but must await resolution of a problem encountered while testing flight-termination system batteries.
Calipso and Cloudsat will be launched aboard a Boeing Delta 2 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The spacecraft are installed in their dual payload attach fitting and are undergoing final battery charging in preparation for transport to the launch pad.
Separately, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is scheduled to be launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., Jan. 11 aboard a Lockheed Martin Atlas 5 rocket. The Centaur upper stage was hoisted onto the Atlas booster Oct. 11.
Spacecraft testing and processing activities in the clean room are on schedule. The instrument that will measure solar wind around Pluto was installed and tested Oct. 6. Spacecraft communications testing with Deep Space Network tracking stations was scheduled to be completed Oct. 15.
