Eumetsat, the European Organisation for The Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, announced further measures to improve hurricane detection.

The organization has announced that the High Resolution Visible (HRV) Channel on Eumetsat’s Meteosat-8 is now set to follow the daily illumination in order to optimize the coverage of the important Atlantic and Indian Ocean regions.

This move by Eumetsat will improve coverage for tropical storm monitoring over the Indian Ocean, by extending the HRV coverage in this region. It also allows for similar monitoring over Western Africa and the mid-Atlantic. This is considered key as tropical storms that begin in this part of the world can potentially develop into destructive and life-threatening hurricanes when they reach the North and Central America.
