Garmin International Inc. will incorporate GPS-enabled location technology by Sirf Technology Holdings Inc. in a new line of integrated personal training systems for cyclists, the companies announced.

The Edge line of training systems will be the first offered by Garmin to include Sirf’s Sirftstar3 architecture, which will provide location data for the user. Garmin initially will offer three versions of the compact, waterproof units that monitor pedaling cadence, heart rate, vertical profiles, climb and descent, altitude, speed, distance and time.

“We are witnessing a tipping point in the GPS market as the perception of GPS shifts from an interesting high-tech novelty to a handy tool everyone can use every day,” Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for Sirf, said in a statement. “Garmin’s adoption of Sirfstar3 architecture for a range of innovative products, such as Edge, is a major step forward towards our vision of being the core GPS technology provider to bring the benefits of location information to mainstream consumers.”

Pricing and availability of the training systems has not been released.
