Eumetsat, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, has said that weather satellites first spotted the development of Hurricane Katrina, which has battered the Gulf Coast of the United States.

Hurricanes very often develop near Africa’s west coast and then move across the Atlantic towards the American continent. These developments are monitored via Eumetsat’s fleet of Meteosat satellites.
