Shin Satellite CEO Dumrong Kasemset believes satellite broadband finally is poised to make a strong impact in Asia. Shin Satellite hopes to become a major player on the landscape with satellite broadband offerings from its new Thaicom 4 satellite (commonly referred to as IPStar), which was placed into orbit Aug. 11.

“It is the year for broadband satellite because up to now, nobody has been able to provide broadband services in the region for $50 a month,” Dumrong told Satellite News. “That requires the lowest-cost user terminal, the most robust technologies and the lowest-cost satellite technology available, and I think this year, you will see the whole thing coming together for once.”

IPStar is based on Space Systems/Loral‘s LS1300-SX model and can provide Internet speeds of 45 gigabits per second across the Asia-Pacific Region.
