Globalstar LLC, opened a gateway in Sebring, Fla., designed to enhance its coverage in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, the company announced July 14.

The Sebring Gateway originally was expected to be operational Aug. 1 but construction was accelerated in order to ensure that Globalstar service and coverage would be available during hurricane season in the southeastern United States, Globalstar said. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission granted Globalstar temporary authority to operate the gateway while the application for permanent operational authority remains under consideration, Globalstar said.
