U.K. Government Looking To Satellites To Avoid Gridlock
The AFX newswire reported June 5 that the U.K. government is considering a plan to use satellite technology to tax vehicles based on the amount of miles driven.
The satellite technology would monitor the vehicles and tax owners based on how much they drive as a replacement to a fuel tax and possibly a road tax. The tax rates would be variable based on where and when motorists drive their vehicles, with lower rates being assessed for rural miles compared to urban miles. Motorists driving on busy roadways at peak hours would be charged more.
Officials cited in the article said the it would take at least 10 years for the system to be introduced, but the officials are working to get the bill ready before the next general election and have a pilot program up and running within the next five to six years.
