Arinc, Telenor Unveil AeroMobile Brand
Arinc Inc. and Telenor jointly unveiled AeroMobile, the service that will allow airline passengers to make cellular phone calls from planes while the planes are in flight. The company is planning demonstration flights with the new service in mid-2005. The service allows passengers to place and receive calls via a standard Inmarsat satellite connection. The service will use miniature cellular technology developed specifically for in-flight use. U.K.-based technology firm ip.access designed what is described as the world’s smallest GSM picocell base station for this application. The new picocell will provide full cabin coverage. The AeroMobile service also will use a ruggedized communications server supplied by VT Miltope as the on-board hub for passenger communications when they launch the service later this year.
