PlanetSky Ltd. said it signed a long-term agreement for the use of capacity on Gascom‘s Yamal 200 satellite located at 49 degrees East. PlanetSky said it intends to load up to four transponders on the satellite.

“With the addition of the Yamal satellite, PlanetSky further increases its foothold in the Middle East and SAARC (Southeast Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) regions,” PlanetSky Vice President of global business operations Sumit Peer said in a prepared statement. “We are providing an especially strong focus on India and Pakistan, with plans to launch a range of new services there, including DVB-IP, DVB-RCS and DVB-SCPC.” SAARC countries include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The company added that it expects to attract “a significant chunk” of the SAARC broadband market since economies of scale allow it to offer services at more attractive rates than the rest of the market.
