According to a Jan. 18 report on eHam.net, the useful life of U0-22 satellite may have come to an end. The satellite, launched in July 1991, has served as a 9600-baud store-and-forward satellite for the SatGate amateur packet radio worldwide network. According to the report, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) has attempted to reactivate the satellite, but other than bringing it back online once for a brief moment in recent week, it remains unsuccessful. SSTL is reportedly attributing the failure to either faulty batteries in the spacecraft or the fact that the satellite, by being in full sunlight, could be very hot, which has caused problems with receivers and batteries in the past.
