XM, Sirius Make Splash at CES
With the Consumer Electronics Showcase opening yesterday in Las Vegas, Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio took the opportunity to launch a variety of new products.
Sirius introduced what it described as its smallest “plug and play” satellite radio, named Star Mate. Company executives said the receiver is about the size of a deck of cards, can be transported between the home, the car and other locations that have connection equipment. The unit comes with home and vehicle adaptor kits and is expected to retail for $129.95.
Pioneer Electronics introduced the SIR-PNR1 add-on Sirius Satellite Radio tuner. The tuner will be sold with the necessary installation hardware and the Sirius antenna. It is compatible with SAT Ready and most IP-bus Pioneer head units. It will be available this month with a suggested retail price of $120.
Giant International introduced the Tao XM2go personal, portable XM satellite radio receiver. The Tao XM2go offers listeners the choice of listening to their favorite XM programs at their convenience, as well as the ability to record up to five hours of programming in the device’s memory. The device will carry a $349.99 suggested retail price tag.
Finally, Delphi increased its satellite radio product line with the introduction of the XM Signal Repeater: a system that wirelessly rebroadcasts the XM signal throughout most homes and small offices. The repeater system includes both a transmitter and receive module. The transmitter down-converts the XM signal through the XM home or audio system antenna and rebroadcasts it through interior walls and flows at an expected range of between 75 and 100 feet. The system will retail for $169 and $69 for each additional receive module.
